Simple Safety tips from the teton county sheriff’s foundation

Halloween is a night for fun, but safety is everyone’s job!

Follow these easy guidelines to keep your trick-or-treating safe and successful.

For Trick-or-Treaters

Be Bright. Carry a flashlight or glow sticks so drivers can see you. Add reflective tape to your costume, mask, and candy bag.

Stay Together. Always trick-or-treat with an adult, or go in a group with a responsible older friend. Stick to homes that have a porch light on.

Look Both Ways. Never dart into the street! Use sidewalks and crosswalks. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the edge as possible.

Costume Check. Costumes should be bright and short enough to prevent tripping. Avoid masks that block your vision - use non-toxic face paint or makeup instead.

Sort Your Treats. Do not eat candy that is unlabeled, open, or unwrapped.

For Drivers and Homeowners

Drive Slowly. The speed limit might be 35, but drive slower in towns and residential areas on Halloween night. Be extra alert for children who might dart out between parked cars.

Keep It Clear. Remove anything a child could trip over from your front porch and walkways. This includes decorations, garden hoses, and extension cords.

Good visibility. Make sure your porch is well-lit. Turn on your outside lights so children can see your sidewalk and your steps.

Pets Indoors. Keep family pets inside where they won’t jump out or scare trick-or-treaters.

Report Suspicious Activities. If you see any suspicious activities or behavior, don’t hesitate to call the Teton County Sheriff’s Office at 208-776-8000 ext 1. For an emergency, call 911.

HOME SECURITY REMINDER

DON’T BECOME A VICTIM OF A REAL “bOOGLARY”

Teton County has seen an increase in burglaries and property crime. While you are focused on handing out treats, don’t forget to protect your home and valuables. Be particularly careful to secure power tools, electronics, and recreation equipment. Video monitoring is a plus.

  • Lock Up. Ensure all doors and windows are locked when you are away from home. Secure your garage, sheds, vehicles, and utility trailers.

  • Lights On. Burglars prefer dark homes. Keep lights on outside your house to give the appearance of activity and make it harder to look through windows.

  • Secure Valuables. Don’t leave car keys, wallets, electronics, power tools, or recreation equipment near doors, in vehicles, or outside where they can be quickly grabbed.

  • Surveillance. Utilize motion-activated recording devices, such as trail cams and video doorbells, to monitor and track activity. Place air tag tracking devices on valuable tools and equipment to assist with recovery.

  • Signage. Let burglars know that your home is protected by a video recording device or security system.
